Injury and Neck Pain
A sudden forced movement of the head or neck in any direction where the muscles and ligaments of the neck are forced to move outside of their normal range is often this is accompanied by a resulting “rebound” in the opposite direction. Neck injury due to sudden jerking of the head is commonly called whiplash. Severe whiplash can also be associated with injury to the intervertebral joints, discs, ligaments, muscles, and nerve roots. If the neck bones (cervical vertebrae) are fractured, the spinal cord may also be damaged.
Common Conditions Leading to Neck Pain
Osteoporosis weakens bones and can lead to small fractures.
Osteoarthritis, a common joint disorder, causes progressive deterioration of cartilage. The body reacts by forming bone spurs that affect joint motion.
Rheumatoid arthritis causes pain, swelling of the joints, and bone spurs. When these occur in the neck area, neck pain can result.
Spinal stenosis occurs when the small nerve passageways in the vertebrae to narrow, compressing and trapping nerve roots as it exits the vertebrae. This can be due to long-term inflammation caused by arthritis or other conditions.causes Stenosis may cause neck, shoulder, and arm pain, as well as numbness, when these nerves are unable to function normally.
Degenerative disc disease can cause reduction in the elasticity and height of intervertebral discs. Over time, a disc may bulge or herniate, causing tingling, numbness, and pain that runs into the arm.
Spondylosis occurs when soft tissues in the spinal anatomy — the spinal discs, tendons, muscles, ligaments and cartilage that lines the facet joints — naturally deteriorate over time. This can also adds stress to your joints.
Fibromyalgia is a condition that causes muscle pain throughout the body, especially in the neck and shoulder region.
Don't Wait
Many people let spinal problems go uncorrected. They hope that if they wait long enough their pain will just go away. In a lot of cases it will go away, but the misalignment that caused the problem is still there. Over time that area can become aggravated, and the pain will return. Without correction the problem can become much more serious. Some patients get to the point where surgery may be the only option. If you have neck pain please don’t wait to have it checked. Neck pain is very common, but it is certainly not normal. You don’t have to become a statistic of neck pain. Take control of the problem before it’s too late.
