E-Stim

Electrical Stimulation

E-Stim can increase circulation (blood flow) to the affected tissue area, which aids in repair, decrease pain, decrease muscular spasm, improve strength, stretch shortened tissue, improve range of motion and mobility, decrease edema and slow the process of muscle atrophy . It can be helpful in managing pain and discomfort from arthritis, Back or neck problems (including sciatica), Bursitis, Carpal tunnel syndrome, Fibromyalgia, Foot and toe issues (OA, plantar fasciitis, metatarsalgia, bunions, hammer toes, sore arches, peripheral neuropathy), Multiple sclerosis, and Tendinitis among other conditions.

What is the process?
A therapist will secure electrodes to your skin. These electrodes are connected via a wire to an e-stim machine.  The therapist then turns a dial on a console which generates electric impulses.  The different types of current are emitted that mimics the action potential that comes from the central nervous system.  You will feel a slight tingling sensation.  The sensation will be increased until it feels strong but comfortable. If the e-stim is used for muscle spasm or pain relief, you will relax during the treatment. If the electricity is used to improve muscular strength or function, you may be required to contract your muscle as the machine is working.

Application of electrical impulses may feel a bit uncomfortable, but they should never hurt. If you feel pain during electrical stimulation, tell your therapist. He or she will adjust the treatment or discontinue its use.
